National Organization of Student and Youth Journalists
Tovább... The National Association of Student and Youth Journalists (DUE) has been educating young print and radio journalists – opinion shaper communication experts of the future – for 19 years. DUE is an organisation of major public benefit.

The beginning

DUE was officially founded in 1989 by individuals. Before that, since 1982, it regularly organized national radio and journalist camps in the summer, courses, and competitions. DUE was the first organization in Central Eastern Europe that realized the need, to educate young people in rather informal ways, and to unite them. DUE’s main object is to facilitate the work of young journalist, and radio makers, and it has a major role in the development of media in small societies, and thus democracy.

DUE, with its numerous activities is a catalyst for the youth editorials in the country. Our projects include events, tenders, educational courses and professional camps. The association mainly aims at helping the work of the youth paper and radio journalists, but it plays a major role in developing community media, as well as enhancing the public sphere and promoting democratic values. The main activity of DUE is informing via its communicational devices: DUE Tallózó, DUE News, National School Radio Network, DUE Online, and the events. In these channels DUE uses the language of youth, thereby making the products easy to understand and accept by young people.

DUE is a founding member of the European Youth Press (EYP), and is in contact with European youth organisations accross the continent, from Georgia to Portugal. Some examples include Polis (Polish Youth Press), Jugendpresse Deutschland (Germany), Jeune Presse (France), Asociación de Prensa Juvenil (Spain), YNPress (Russia), and so on. The association actively participates in international projects, for example the first European Youth Media Days in Brussels, or organising and hosting the News in Motion conference and the General Assembly of EYP in Budapest. DUE is currently one of the strongest and most active member in the network of European youth media associations.

The projects of DUE are managed by the president, two vice-presidents, and a 3-member executive committee, with the help of different sections within the association. The work of the leadership is helped extensively by the efforts of a circle of activists. Their training has always been an important factor, since their work is essential to the smooth running of the associaton. DUE Tallózó

Our youth paper takes most of its articles from the top-quality works of youth journalists writing for their school papers. DUE Tallózó provides an authentic insight to the youth media of the country, and is at the same time a motivating force for the youth paper editorials, providing a serious opportunity for young journalists to have their works published in a national youth paper.

DUE Rádió – National School Radio Network

All over the country, more than 200.000 students listen to the programmes of DUE Radio. The monthly CDs, containing educational and professional radio programmes, are played during class breaks in 350 elementary and secondary schools.

DUE Online

For more than 7 years DUE has been present on the internet as well, via www.due.hu, a www.due.hu/radio, and www.due.hu/tallozo homepages. The pages are updated and renewed regularly, and apart from serving as a news source for our members, they provide information on all aspects of DUE. We are proud of our ever-growing number of visitors, compared to other youth portals.

National Youth Press Festival

For the biggest event of youth print and radio journalists, we invite more than 1500 young people who are in some way connected to youth media. The aim of the festival is not only to entertain, it is the place where DUE rewards the best youth journalists in the country. The winners of the yearly National Youth Media Tender are awarded at an official ceremony. We compile the programme of the festival based on a preliminary polls among students, and we invite respected members of professional media, as well as stars of tv and radio programmes. The festival is also rich in gettogethers, concerts, quizzes and other activities.

Youth Media Festival

This is where we get an insight to the world of professional media from respected members of the journalist community. Our guests include professionals from national televisions, radios and newspapers, as well as media researchers and advertising experts. The aim of the event is to educate the future journalists, opinion formers of their circle, about how professional media works, as well as preparing them for their future occupation.

Communication and Media Summer Camp

In the summer camp youth journalists have the chance to master the basics of non-biased journalism, as well as trying out the things they learnt in practice. This is a unique opportunity, and for the past years it has proved to be essential for the young journalists: many of them start their own youth paper or radio, as well as choosing media as the field of their studies after secondary school. Participants are from all over the country. The camp has approximately 100 participants, and a 20-strong group of professional journalists who help the development of the young journalists, as well as running the camp.

Foreign Affairs

DUE was one of the founder members of the European Youth Press (Basel, 1992) and of Youth Press European Network (Youth PEN, 2000). The first General Assambly of Youth PEN was organized in Alsóörs, Hungary in the year 2000 by DUE and the vice-president was also delegated by the Hungarian organization.

After Youth PEN was wound up, DUE was invited to Berlin, to the founding conference of a new organization, European Youth Press (EYP). DUE delegated one member to the board of this new organization, and one member to the auditing commission. On DUE’s initial, 3 Hungarian minority youth press organizations were founded outside the borders of Hungary (Romania - DUMA, Ukraine - KaMDUSZ, Yugoslavia – VaMIRSz).

Following the reactivation of EYP, DUE has been playing an active role in the European scene: hosting most of the EYP's yearly General Assemblies as well as participating in the conferences organised by other youth press associations. DUE also has two board members (Nikoletta Incze and Róbert Holndonner) and an observing member (Péter Danku) in EYP, as well as a project manager in the EYP office in Brussels (Hajnalka Győri).
